We offer numerous opportunities for you to practice speaking, getting you out of your textbooks and enhancing your language retention and fluency.
I taught my first Adult ESL class when I was in college completing my degree in International Affairs. But, my interaction with non-English speakers started long before that when I came to the United States, from Jamaica, and grew up around Spanish and French speakers from other Caribbean islands. It forced me to be both a learner of another language and a help to those who did not speak English. Because of this I have always loved to learn languages and know first-hand how difficult it can be to remember all the grammar rules and vocabulary when trying to speak fluently. I have also experienced how awkward it can be to speak around native speakers. We all want to sound as assured and thoughtful in the language we are learning as we do in our primary language – but it is hard to keep it all straight; embarrassment sets in and speaking shuts down. I’ve been there.
While each language has its own unique challenges they all share something in common – the difficulty in connecting what we know in our head with what comes out of our mouths. Conversational fluency is usually what people most want to achieve and often the hardest thing to master. This is why ESL Speak focuses on conversation (with proper grammar). While there are other ESL programs in the area they focus on advanced academic learning with vocabulary that does not help you have a regular conversation in your community. Other programs simply do not give often their students enough opportunity to work on the language skills they want and need because the focus is on “doing the book”. Not us.
